Masks
Masks in Mexico tell a story and the story, usually associated
with religious fiestas, is acted out in dances, or pagents.
Each region of Mexico has its own unique style of dances and
masks. Even when regions celebrate the same date fiesta, the
regional masks and dances are different and unique. If a town
is prosperous, they will sometimes hire a dance troop to come
into their town and perform selected dances for the more important
fiestas. The mask maker in a village usually learns mask-making
from a family member, a tradition that is handed down generation
to generation. Masks and the fiestas and the accompanying dances
are steeped in tradition, and have great appeal both for the
observer and the participants. It is part of the magic of Mexico.
The masks of Michoacan are among the best in all of Mexico.
We have included two Guerrero Masks in this sampling -- the
Tigre y Traje and the Mariposa mask as we have an excellent
contact in Guerrero for these highly prized masks. This is a
