Gallery Four - DAY OF THE DEAD
THEME ART
Catrinas are very much alive! Catrinas and Catrines have gained
popularity, today more so for foreigners than the Mexicans themselves.
Originally the " La Catrina", a female dandy, was
invented as part of a political satire mocking of the european-influenced
ruling class of Mexico during the autocratic rule of Porfirio
Diaz. The Catrina is credited to Jose Guadalupe Posada, a famous
engraver and newspaper illustrator. Don Juan Torres, often touted
as a "treasure" of Michoacan, is the most famous Catrina
maker in all of Mexico. Showcased here are several Juan Torres
catrinas, a Juan Torres Emiliano Zapata sculpture, as well as
catrinas from other fine Michoacan artists in clay, carton,
papier mache and wire. The catrina dressed in black is a life-sized
catrina. |
